Dog Fences - Keeping Pets Safe!

Dog Fence technology has improved greatly over time.

Their was a day when dog fence receiver collars were so big and heavy that smaller dogs could not wear the collars comfortably.  Some weighed 3 to 5 ounces.  Pet owners would see the size of the collars and cringe at the thought of their tiny companions wearing a concrete block around their little neck.  Today, most pet fence receiver collars weigh between 1.25 and 2.5 ounces so small pets can wear the collars comfortably and their neck is not dragging the ground.

Early dog fence technology also had antenna design issues in the receiver collars.  Some collars had only one antenna, so when savvy pets shook their head and the receiver moved to the side of their neck the collar would not activate. Once Fifi (small dog) or Fido (large dog) figured this out they discovered a brand new world.

Another Great Shot of the Collar

Today's receiver collars have anywhere from 2 to 4 antenna's.  So, no matter where the receiver is on the pet's neck the collar will find the radio signal from the dog fence wire, activate correctly, and keep Fifi and Fido home.

Another issue with old technology dog fence receiver collars was the inability to adjust the shock output from the receiver.  Most older technology receiver collars would only administer one level of correction.

This was not good for two reasons.

  • One, for smaller dogs the electric shock output could be too strong  thereby causing Fifi to become a patio potato and not run in the yard for fear of getting zapped.
  • The second reason one level of correction was not good, was that bigger dogs might escape the dog fence boundary because their was not enough shock output to keep Fido safely home.

Today's dog fence systems have come a long way. Some retail or Internet systems still only come with one shock level, but almost all professional dealer installed systems come with adjustable correction levels on the receiver collars.

This is a distinct advantage in that Fifi can be on a low level and Fido can be on a high level if need be.  There are even a couple of professional system receiver collars on the market for stubborn dogs that will continue administering a correction even if Fido runs through the dog fence boundary.

It should be mentioned that pet fence receiver collars are safe

They are designed to administer higher voltage levels but very, very low amperage levels. So, basically it is the equivalent of getting a static shock on a metal object inside your house.  You feel a static shock but there is no physical harm done whatsoever.

The same is true of dog fence receiver collars.  The pet will feel the shock but their will be absolutely no harm done to the pet.  It should be noted also, that most professional pet containment systems have a safety shut-off on the collar so that if Fifi or Fido get caught in the shock zone the collars will shut down after 15 to 20 seconds.

In conclusion, dog fencing has advanced to the point that small breeds like Yorkshire Terriers, Maltese, and Poodles can be safely contained.  Large breeds such as Labs, Golden Retrievers, Rottweilers, and Mastiffs can also be successfully contained without fear of them escaping the pet fence boundary.

In order for pet fences to be effective, however, it is imperative that all instructions are followed in how to correctly train your pet(s) to the system.  Pet fences come with thorough manuals on installation and training. And professionally installed systems come with local dealer support.  Your pet(s) will love the freedom a dog fence provides.
